The Ultimate Wedding Planning Timeline for a Stress-Free Wedding Day
Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times in your life, but it can also feel a little overwhelming at the beginning. Once the excitement of your engagement settles, many couples suddenly realise just how many decisions there are to make.
From choosing your venue and booking suppliers to finalising your guest list and organising the timeline for the day, wedding planning can quickly become a long to-do list.
The good news is that with a clear wedding planning timeline, everything becomes much more manageable. Breaking your planning into stages helps you stay organised and actually enjoy the process instead of feeling stressed by it.
As a wedding planner in Somerset, I often remind couples that planning your wedding should feel exciting and joyful — not overwhelming. So here is a simple guide to help you understand what to do and when during your wedding planning journey.
18–24 Months Before Your Wedding
This is where your wedding planning journey really begins.
The first step is usually booking your wedding venue. Your venue will determine your wedding date and influence many of the decisions you make later, including your décor, styling and suppliers.
Once your venue is secured, it’s a good idea to set your wedding budget. Think about what you feel comfortable spending and remember to include a small emergency fund for unexpected costs.
At this stage you may also want to begin creating a wedding vision board. Pinterest can be helpful for gathering ideas for colours, flowers, styling and overall wedding inspiration. Just remember that your ideas may evolve over time — and that’s completely normal.
Some suppliers get booked up very quickly, especially in popular wedding locations such as Somerset and the South West, so it’s worth securing the key ones early. These usually include:
Wedding photographer
Hair stylist
Makeup artist
Wedding planner or coordinator
Venue stylist
You might also start drafting your wedding guest list, although this will likely change several times throughout the planning process.
And one important thing many couples forget — wedding insurance. It provides peace of mind should anything unexpected happen.
12–18 Months Before Your Wedding
Once the big foundations are in place, you can start focusing on the more personal elements of your wedding.
Many couples choose this time to ask their closest friends and family to be part of their wedding party, whether that’s bridesmaids, groomsmen or other special roles.
If you’re wearing a wedding gown, this is also the ideal time to begin trying dresses. Many bridal gowns take several months to arrive and need time for alterations.
You’ll also want to finalise your guest list and send out save-the-dates, particularly if guests will be travelling.
This stage is when your wedding vision starts to take shape. You might begin choosing your wedding colours, décor style and overall theme for the day.
It’s also the time to book additional suppliers such as:
Florists
Caterers
Cake makers
Entertainment
Wedding transport
If you’re getting married in the UK, you’ll also need to give notice at your local registry office within the required timeframe.
6 Months Before Your Wedding
By now, your wedding plans should be well underway.
This is when couples typically start organising their wedding outfits, including suits, bridesmaids dresses and accessories.
You’ll likely attend your menu tasting with your venue or caterer around this time as well.
Many couples also begin planning their honeymoon during this stage.
It’s also a good idea to create a wedding website for your guests. This can include helpful information such as directions, accommodation suggestions and transport details.
You’ll also want to:
Order your wedding rings
Send your wedding invitations
Request RSVPs by a certain date so your venue and caterers can prepare.
2–3 Months Before Your Wedding
Now the final details start coming together.
Your hen and stag celebrations are usually organised around this time, often by your wedding party.
You’ll also want to meet with your wedding planner or venue coordinator to confirm the details for the day.
One of the most important tasks during this stage is creating your wedding day timeline. This helps ensure all suppliers know where they need to be and when.
You’ll also want to:
Pay supplier balances
Finalise outfit fittings
Break in your wedding shoes
One Month Before Your Wedding
Now it’s all about finishing touches.
You may need to chase a few final RSVPs and confirm guest numbers with your venue.
This is also when couples write their wedding vows and speeches.
You might also choose your wedding day fragrance, which many couples say becomes a beautiful reminder of their wedding day for years to come.
One important tip — avoid trying new beauty treatments too close to the wedding. Stick with what you know works for you.
Your Wedding Day
Your wedding day will likely go by incredibly quickly, so the most important thing is to enjoy it.
Eat well, drink plenty of water and take moments to breathe and take everything in.
One of my favourite recommendations for couples is to take five minutes alone together during the day. Many couples do this after the ceremony during drinks reception. It’s a lovely moment to pause and enjoy the fact that you are now married.
After the Wedding
Once the celebrations are over, there are just a few final tasks:
Send thank-you cards
Collect your items from the venue
Change your name if you choose to
And of course, enjoy your honeymoon.
